The purpose of this unit is for my students to explore and learn new concepts and skills dealing with Measurement. My students will also learn how to apply these concepts to their everyday life to utilize outside of the classroom. The whole concept of measurement can be difficult to understand due to the number of skills that are in this area of mathematics. However, throughout this unit, many students will learn about the measurement of length and converting measurements through hands-on experiments, activity sheets, and creative small-group projects. In addition, my students will be introduced to literature that deals with measurement as well. Living in the United States, my students are not very familiar with the metric system of measurement but by the end of this unit, they will understand the basics of the metric system and basic conversation from the metric system to the imperial system. The students in my classroom are already very familiar with basic skills and vocabulary that are involved in measurement. They also are aware that measurement is used around them. Although their terminology is very basic their understanding will help to build upon their knowledge and the concept of measurement throughout this unit. |
